Evaluating Physical and Rendered Material Appearance

چکیده
Many representations and rendering techniques have been proposed for presenting material appearance in computer graphics. One outstanding problem is evaluating their accuracy. In this paper, we propose assessing accuracy by comparing human judgements of material attributes made when viewing a computer graphics rendering to the judgements made when viewing a physical sample of the same material. We demonstrate this approach using 16 diverse physical material samples that were distributed to researchers at the MAM 2014 workshop. We performed two psychophysical experiments. In the first experiment we examined how consistently subjects rate a set of twelve visual, tactile and subjective attributes for individual physical material specimens. In the second experiment we asked subjects to assess the same attributes for the same materials rendered as BTFs under point-light and environment illuminations. By analysis of the obtained data, we identified which material attributes and material types are judged consistently and to what extent the computer graphics representation conveyed the experience of viewing the physical material appearance.

Tangible display systems: direct interfaces for computer-based studies of surface appearance
When evaluating the surface appearance of real objects, observers engage in complex behaviors involving active manipulation and dynamic viewpoint changes that allow them to observe the changing patterns of surface reflections. We are developing a class of tangible display systems to provide these natural modes of interaction in computer-based studies of material perception. A first-generation t...
متن کاملDigital Transmission of Subjective Material Appearance
The digital recreation of real-world materials has a substantial role in applications such as product design, on-line shopping or video games. Since decisions in design or shopping are often driven by qualities like “softness” or “beautifulness” of a material (rather than its photo-accurate visual depiction), a digital material should not only closely capture the texture and reflectance of the ...
متن کاملMaterial-illumination ambiguities and the perception of solid objects.
The appearance of objects depends on their material, shape, and on the illumination conditions. Conversely, object appearance provides us with cues about the illumination and the material. This so-called inverse problem is basically underdetermined and therefore we expect that material and illumination perception are confounded. To gain insight into the relevant mechanisms, we rendered a set of...

Figure 1: A synthetic object with a material history captured from a physical object. Abstract We consider the problem of modeling objects composed of materials that change over the course of time. First principles simulation of the processes that cause material change are either extraordinarily time consuming or impossible because the processes are not thoroughly understood. We take the approa...
متن کاملAcquisition and modeling of material appearance
In computer graphics, the realistic rendering of synthetic scenes requires a precise description of surface geometry, lighting, and material appearance. While 3D geometry scanning and modeling have advanced significantly in recent years, measurement and modeling of accurate material appearance have remained critical challenges. Analytical models are the main tools to describe material appearanc...
